The electric furnace with its lowest capital cost per tonne and easy access to scrap / DRI is an increasingly viable avenue for steel making. Maithan offers customized zoned linings for electric furnaces based on its comprehensive portfolio of basic bricks, basic monolithics, EAF productsalumina castables and gunning masses.

A combination of magcarbon, magnesite, chemically bonded magchrome and steel clad chrome mag bricks can be used for lining of the metal zone, slag zone, sub hearth and free board. A variety of basic ramming masses including the flagship product MCL RAM95 can be used to line the hearth. Roofs and delta can be cast with Maithan’s range of low cement castables for faster turnaround time.

For EBT furnace, Maithan provides end blocks, tap tubes and EBT filling mass. MCL GUN95 is the highly successful multi utility monolithic for EOF maintenance. The EHS range of Magnesia carbon bricks are specially designed for EAF 'hot spots'.



Recognizing the typical needs of a particular converter with respect to its thermal, mechanical and chemical stresses, Maithan can design and engineer completely zoned linings based on magnesia carbon refractories for optimum life and lowest UCPT (unit cost per tonne of steel). Various unshaped refractories complement the basic wear lining and hot repair products are supplied for the maintenance of the lining.

Induction Furnace

Production of steel through the induction furnace accounts for a sizeable tonnage. Moreover, non-ferrous melting is also done by the induction furnace route. Maithan manufactures a wide range of alumina and basic refractory monolithics for use in channel type and coreless induction furnace. A recent development is the spinel forming ramming mass, MCL COREMAG SP-DRM which has found acceptability in various ferrous and non-ferrous applications and is a 100% import substitute. The Application Engineering group undertakes design, engineering and application of refractories for this category of furnace.

The Application Engineering group at Maithan undertakes design, application and maintenance of the refractory lining in association with the shop floor team. Feedback in the form of wear pattern analysis and operation data is regularly sent to Maithan’s research center in an effort to optimize the refractory performance and achieve a perfectly balanced wear in service. The Ladle Management Contract is a full time responsibility for Maithan and remuneration is linked to predefined performance criteria / tonnes of steel produced.


The MACVIB series of low cement castables is the most suitable and preferred material for the permanent lining of hot tundish. Apart from the permanent lining in the hot tundish, Maithan also manufactures basic spraying mass which acts as a parting material between the permanent lining and molten steel. This arrangement ensures faster deskulling of the tundish after every use. For cold tundish a 50% Al2O3 based lining is suggested.
